An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but right away informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the courage or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
