PSG Defeats Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening cup on 14 different occasions.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired two times late to take a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial equaliser in the final moments to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
