Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
