Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying such treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
